AI Fluency for Nonprofits

Mission-driven teams do the most with the least. AI can widen that margin — if privacy and values lead the way.

— the nonprofit lens

The 4Ds for nonprofit staff, built with GivingTuesday. This course runs the inner loop across research and writing, the outer loop across privacy and data, then puts it together with workflow augmentation and integration — increasing impact while staying true to mission.

01Mission-driven fluency

The framework for limited resources

A partnership between Anthropic and GivingTuesday, this course helps nonprofit staff — in fundraising, communications, program delivery, and operations — apply the 4D framework to stretch limited resources further without drifting from the mission.

Key concept · Two loops, four real jobs

The course maps the 4Ds onto everyday nonprofit work through the two loops. The Description–Discernment loop covers the craft of researching and writing with AI; the Delegation–Diligence loop covers privacy and data and data analysis. It closes with workflow augmentation and integration — weaving AI into how the team already works rather than bolting it on.

02Inner loop

Researching and writing with AI

The inner loop is where most nonprofit hours are saved: turning research and writing from blank-page slogs into guided iterations.

Key concept · From grant drafts to donor comms

Researching with AI: gather background on funders, issues, and best practices, synthesize reports, and prep for meetings — then discern the accuracy of specifics (a hallucinated statistic in a grant application is a real risk). Writing with AI: draft and refine grant narratives, appeals, newsletters, and program materials in your organization's voice, iterating with feedback. The competency that protects quality is Discernment: you bring the mission knowledge and the final judgment.

03Outer loop & integration

Privacy, data, and weaving AI into the work

The outer loop is where nonprofits carry special responsibility: they hold sensitive data about donors and the people they serve.

Key concept · Privacy first, then analysis and integration

Understanding privacy and data comes before data analysis with AI for a reason: Delegation and Diligence require knowing what data is sensitive, what may never be shared, and how to protect the people behind the numbers. With that guardrail set, AI can help analyze program and donor data for insight. Finally, workflow augmentation and integration make it stick — embedding AI into recurring processes so the whole team benefits, consistent with the organization's values.
