Course Study Guide · Part 2 · AI Fluency for your field

AI Fluency for Creative Work

Decide where AI adds value and where it must not — then protect the part that makes the work yours.

— the creative stance

The 4Ds for creators, writers, illustrators, designers, and musicians. This course adds two creative lenses for deciding where AI belongs, runs the framework as an inner and outer loop, and frames AI's roles as Delegation outcomes — all while protecting authorship and voice.

01Two lenses

The creative value lens and the production lens

Before applying the 4Ds, the course offers two creative lenses for looking at any project — a way to decide, deliberately, where AI helps and where it would hollow the work out.

Key concept · Where AI belongs, and where it must not

The creative value lens asks what makes this work yours — the vision, taste, voice, and choices that carry your signature; the parts you protect. The production lens asks what's craft labor around that core — variations, formatting, boilerplate, tedium, exploration. AI is powerful through the production lens and dangerous through the creative-value lens; separating the two is the intentional, analysis-driven decision the course keeps asking you to make.

02Inner & outer loops

The framework as two loops

With the lenses set, the 4Ds run as the now-familiar pair — the inner loop (Description and Discernment) and the outer loop (Delegation and Diligence).

Key concept · The inner loop is where taste lives

The inner loop — describe, evaluate, refine — is where a creator's taste does the heavy lifting: you can generate a hundred options, but Discernment is choosing the one that's right, and iterating it toward your intent. The outer loop — Delegation and Diligence — decides which work to bring AI into (guided by the lenses) and keeps you responsible for what you publish: honesty about how it was made, respect for others' rights, and ownership of the result.

03AI's roles & your voice

AI roles as Delegation outcomes

The synthesis lesson reframes the many ways AI can show up in creative work as outcomes of your Delegation choices — you decide the role it plays.

Key concept · You cast the role

Depending on what you delegate, AI becomes a brainstorming partner, a research assistant, a production helper (variations, drafts, formatting), a critic/editor, or a tutor for a new technique — and just as deliberately, not the author of the parts that carry your voice. Getting the roles right is Delegation done well; keeping your authorship and being transparent about AI's contribution is Diligence. The course's throughline: use AI to make more and better work while protecting what makes your work yours.

Chapter 11 quiz

Thirteen questions on the lenses, the loops, and AI's roles. Answer first, then expand Show answer.

Part A · Multiple choice

Q1

The creative value lens asks:

  • A What makes this work distinctively yours — the parts to protect
  • B How fast you can produce it
  • C Which file format to use
  • D How much AI costs
Show answer

A.

Q2

The production lens asks:

  • A What's craft labor around the core — variations, formatting, tedium, exploration
  • B What your vision is
  • C Who your audience is only
  • D Nothing useful
Show answer

A. AI is powerful here.

Q3

Through which lens is AI most dangerous to lean on?

  • A The creative value lens
  • B The production lens
  • C Neither
  • D Both equally
Show answer

A. It can hollow out what makes the work yours.

Q4

In the inner loop, what does a creator's Discernment amount to?

  • A Taste — choosing the right option and iterating toward intent
  • B Generating as many options as possible
  • C Accepting the first result
  • D Counting words
Show answer

A.

Q5

"AI roles as Delegation outcomes" means:

  • A The role AI plays follows from what you choose to delegate
  • B AI decides its own role
  • C Roles are random
  • D AI is always the author
Show answer

A. You cast the role.

Q6

Which is an appropriate AI role in creative work?

  • A Brainstorming partner, production helper, or critic — not the author of your signature parts
  • B Sole author of everything
  • C Replacement for your vision
  • D None ever
Show answer

A.

Part B · True or false

Q7

The two lenses help you decide, deliberately, where AI helps and where it doesn't.

Show answer

True. Intentional, analysis-driven decisions.

Q8

The outer loop keeps you responsible for what you publish.

Show answer

True. Delegation + Diligence.

Q9

Transparency about AI's contribution is part of creative Diligence.

Show answer

True. Along with respecting others' rights.

Q10

Generating a hundred options is the same as good Discernment.

Show answer

False. Discernment is choosing the right one and iterating it.

Part C · Short answer

Q11

Name the two creative lenses.

Show answer

The creative value lens and the production lens.

Q12

Name three roles AI can play as a Delegation outcome.

Show answer

Any three: brainstorming partner, research assistant, production helper, critic/editor, tutor.

Q13

What is the course's throughline?

Show answer

Make more and better work while protecting what makes your work yours.
