Course Study Guide · Part 2 · AI Fluency for your field

AI Fluency for pK-12 Educators

Younger learners raise the stakes on responsibility — so the pK-12 track leads with ethics, and then teaches you to teach it to your colleagues.

— the pK-12 emphasis

A two-course learning path for pK–12. The first course applies the 4Ds to the pK-12 classroom with a strong responsible-use emphasis; the second, Train-the-Trainer, hands you a kit to teach other educators. Built with the American Federation of Teachers.

01The classroom

The 4Ds for younger learners

The pK-12 Educators course covers the familiar foundations — the 4D framework, a hands-on "Explore!", and how AI works (capabilities and limitations) — but frames them for teaching children and teenagers, where safety, age-appropriateness, and modeling good habits matter more than in any other audience.

Key concept · Delegation and Description in a pK-12 setting

Teachers use AI to lighten the load — differentiating a reading for three levels, generating examples, drafting parent communications, building rubrics — while keeping the relational, developmental work that only a teacher does. And because the model's limitations (hallucination, bias, a knowledge cutoff) can mislead young learners who trust confident text, Description (clear, grade-appropriate prompting) and expert Discernment before anything reaches students are non-negotiable.

02Responsible use

Using AI responsibly — the heart of the pK-12 course

A whole section is devoted to responsibility: creating high-quality AI outputs, ethics & responsible AI use, and a distinctive lesson, “AI's constitution, pedagogy, and you.”

Key concept · From Constitutional AI to classroom values

The course connects Constitutional AI — the principles that make Claude helpful, honest, and harmless — to a teacher's own pedagogy and values: the tool has a "constitution," and so does your classroom. Diligence here means age-appropriate use, protecting student privacy and data, transparency with students and parents, and teaching children why we verify and disclose — building the habits early rather than policing them later.

03Train the trainer

From learner to trainer

The second course, pK-12 Train the Trainer (built with the American Federation of Teachers), turns a fluent educator into a facilitator who can lead AI-fluency learning for other educators — so the skill cascades through a school or district.

Key concept · The facilitation kit

It's a short, practical course centered on a ready-to-use kit: a facilitator deck and guide for running a session, and a learner workbook for participants — plus guidance on how to use the kit. The recommended prerequisite is completing the pK-12 Educators course (and the core Framework & Foundations) first, so you've built your own 4D fluency before teaching it to peers.

  • B Government law to grading
  • C APIs to lesson plans
  • D Nothing in particular
Show answer

Q4

Why is Discernment especially critical in pK-12?

Show answer

A. Build your own fluency before teaching peers.

Part B · True or false

Q7

The pK-12 course devotes a full section to using AI responsibly.

Show answer

True. High-quality outputs, ethics, and AI's constitution/pedagogy.

Q8

Protecting student privacy and data is part of Diligence here.

Show answer

True.

Q9

Teachers should hand AI-generated material to students without reviewing it.

Show answer

False. Expert Discernment before it reaches students is non-negotiable.

Q10

Train-the-Trainer's goal is to let AI fluency cascade to other educators.

Show answer

True. From learner to facilitator.

Q11

The pK-12 track teaches children to verify and disclose as early habits.

Show answer

True. Build habits early rather than policing later.

Part C · Short answer

Q12

Name two things pK-12 teachers can delegate to AI while keeping the human work.

Show answer

Any two: differentiating readings by level, generating examples, drafting parent communications, building rubrics — keeping relational/developmental teaching.

Q13

Name the three components of the Train-the-Trainer kit.

Show answer

Facilitator deck, facilitator guide, and learner workbook (with guidance on how to use the kit).
