The framework, and how AI actually works
The course grounds the 4D framework and a short capabilities-and-limitations primer (with an "Explore!" exercise) in the reality of a small business: few people, many roles, and no time to waste on tools that don't pull their weight.
Key concept · Delegation is triage
For an owner, Delegation is triage across the whole business — marketing copy, customer emails, scheduling, first-draft policies, competitive research, spreadsheet cleanup. Hand AI the repeatable drafting and analysis that eats your evenings; keep the relationships, the final calls, and anything that is your business's distinctive value. Knowing AI's limitations (it can be confidently wrong, it doesn't know your customers) tells you where to supply context and where to stay hands-on.
The Description–Discernment loop: refining with AI
The day-to-day craft is the inner loop — describe what you need, judge what comes back, refine. The course's lesson “Refining with AI” makes iteration the core skill.
Key concept · First draft, then dialogue
Treat AI output as a starting point you improve, not a finished answer. Give it your real context (who your customer is, your voice, your constraints), get a draft, then refine with specific feedback — "tighten this," "match this past email's tone," "this claim is wrong, here's the fact." Discernment is what keeps quality up: you're the expert on your business, so you catch what a generic model can't. The loop turns a mediocre first pass into something you'd actually send.
The Delegation–Diligence loop: transparent, human-in-the-loop use
The outer loop is the strategic and ethical frame. The lesson “Transparent AI use” and the closing “Human in the loop” tie it together.
Key concept · Efficiency without drifting from values
Growing efficiency shouldn't cost you trust. Diligence for a small business means transparency where it matters (customers deserve to know when they're talking to AI), protecting customer data, and keeping a human in the loop on anything that carries risk or represents your brand. The through-line the course keeps returning to: use AI to increase impact and efficiency while staying true to your mission and values — the efficiency is only worth it if the business is still recognizably yours.
Chapter 9 quiz
Twelve questions on the loops, transparency, and staying true to values. Answer first, then expand Show answer.
Part A · Multiple choice
For a small-business owner, Delegation is best thought of as:
- A Triage — hand off repeatable drafting/analysis, keep relationships and distinctive value
- B Handing off everything
- C Never using AI
- D Only using AI for email
Show answer
A.
The inner loop (Description–Discernment) centers on:
- A Refining output through iteration
- B Deploying servers
- C Filing taxes
- D Hiring staff
Show answer
A. "Refining with AI."
What makes your Discernment strong in your own business?
- A You're the expert on your customers and voice — you catch what a generic model can't
- B The model knows your business better than you
- C Discernment doesn't apply
- D Longer outputs
Show answer
A.
What does "Transparent AI use" imply for customers?
- A They deserve to know when they're interacting with AI
- B Hide AI use always
- C Transparency is optional in all cases
- D Customers don't matter
Show answer
A. Part of Diligence.
The course's recurring through-line is:
- A Increase impact and efficiency while staying true to mission and values
- B Maximize output at any cost
- C Replace all staff
- D Avoid AI
Show answer
A.
Part B · True or false
AI output should be treated as a starting point you improve, not a finished answer.
Show answer
True.
Keeping a human in the loop matters most on low-risk, off-brand tasks.
Show answer
False. It matters most on anything risky or that represents your brand.
Giving AI your real context and voice improves the draft.
Show answer
True. Description drives relevance.
Protecting customer data is part of Diligence.
Show answer
True.
Part C · Short answer
Name the two loops and what each governs.
Show answer
Inner = Description–Discernment (refining work); outer = Delegation–Diligence (what to hand off + responsible use).
Give two tasks a small business could reasonably delegate to AI.
Show answer
Any two: marketing copy, customer email drafts, competitive research, spreadsheet cleanup, first-draft policies.
Why is efficiency alone not the goal?
Show answer
It's only worth it if the business stays true to its mission and values — recognizably yours.
