Analyze Images with Content Understanding

Define a schema, not a prompt. Content Understanding turns a messy image into the exact fields you asked for — each with a confidence score and a place it came from.

— the module's premise

Schema-driven image analysis. This module covers Content Understanding and its analyzer framework, the prebuilt image analyzers and the extract / classify / generate field schema, and reading the results — markdown, fields, and grounding.

What Content Understanding is

Azure Content Understanding is a Foundry tool that uses generative AI to turn unstructured content — documents, images, video, audio — into structured, actionable output. Its advantages: a unified process across content types, schema-based extraction without prompt engineering, cross-validation across multiple models, and confidence scores with grounding.

Key concept · The analyzer pipeline

An analyzer defines the processing approach and field schema. It runs content extraction (OCR, layout, transcription → normalized text/metadata), then field extraction (structured key-value pairs from your schema), attaching a confidence score (0–1) and grounding (where in the content each value came from). Output is Markdown (for search/RAG) or JSON (for automation). Analyzers are either prebuilt or custom.

02Analyzers & schema

Prebuilt analyzers and three field methods

Supported image formats include JPEG, PNG, BMP, TIFF, HEIF, and PDF. Four prebuilt image analyzers cover common cases: prebuilt-image (general content extraction + figure description), prebuilt-receipt, prebuilt-invoice, and prebuilt-idDocument.

The three field-extraction methods.
MethodWhat it doesExample
extractPull a value directly as it appears.Text from a label or sign.
classifyCategorize from predefined options (an enum)."damaged" vs "undamaged".
generateCreate a value based on analysis.A scene description.

A schema field carries a type, a method, a description, and (for classify) an enum of options.

Reading what comes back

Install the SDK (pip install azure-ai-contentunderstanding), initialize a client with endpoint and credential (key or Entra ID), and call begin_analyze() with an analyzer ID and the image — processing the poller asynchronously.

Key concept · The three result components (and the confidence bands)

Results have markdown (text for search/RAG), fields (values with confidence scores matching your schema), and source (grounding — where each value was found). Rules of thumb for the confidence score: 0.9+ good for automated processing, 0.7–0.9 consider human review, <0.7 verify manually. Accuracy improves with higher-resolution images, good lighting/contrast, a single clear subject, and upright orientation.

Chapter 26 quiz

Fourteen questions on the framework, analyzers/schema, and results. Answer first, then expand Show answer.

Part A · Multiple choice

Q1

What does Content Understanding produce from unstructured content?

  • A Structured, actionable output (Markdown or JSON)
  • B Only a raw image copy
  • C A fine-tuned model
  • D A spreadsheet macro
Show answer

A. Structured fields with confidence and grounding.

Q2

What does an analyzer define?

  • A The processing approach and field schema
  • B The Azure region only
  • C The billing plan
  • D The user's password
Show answer

A. Plus extraction settings and model choices.

Q3

Which field method categorizes a value from predefined options?

  • A extract
  • B classify
  • C generate
  • D redact
Show answer

B — classify. Using an enum of options.

Q4

Which prebuilt analyzer does general content extraction plus figure description?

  • A prebuilt-image
  • B prebuilt-receipt
  • C prebuilt-invoice
  • D prebuilt-idDocument
Show answer

A — prebuilt-image.

Q5

What does "grounding" (the source component) tell you?

  • A Where in the content a value was found
  • B The model's training date
  • C The API price
  • D The file size
Show answer

A. The specific region the value came from.

Q6

A confidence score of 0.95 suggests:

  • A Suitable for automated processing
  • B Always needs manual review
  • C The field failed
  • D The image was rejected
Show answer

A. 0.9+ is high confidence.

Part B · True or false

Q7

Content Understanding handles documents, images, audio, and video.

Show answer

True. A single service across four modalities.

Q8

The results include a markdown representation useful for search and RAG.

Show answer

True. Alongside fields and source.

Q9

You must write complex prompts to extract fields with Content Understanding.

Show answer

False. You define a schema — no prompt engineering required.

Q10

Content Understanding integrates Azure AI Content Safety for responsible AI.

Show answer

True. Filtering violence, hate, and exploitation; face description needs notice/consent.

Q11

The generate method pulls a value exactly as it appears in the image.

Show answer

False. That's extract; generate creates a value from analysis (e.g. a description).

Part C · Short answer

Q12

Name the three field-extraction methods.

Show answer

extract, classify, and generate.

Q13

Name the three components of an analysis result.

Show answer

markdown, fields (with confidence), and source (grounding).

Q14

Name three of the four prebuilt image analyzers.

Show answer

Any three: prebuilt-image, prebuilt-receipt, prebuilt-invoice, prebuilt-idDocument.
